Dry Gulch Road

You are invited to travel through a landscape of imagination down the labyrinthine dead-end, “Dry Gulch Road” of social injustice and share in “The Silent Cry” for the emancipation of those of us discarded by random, existential forces of existence. Walk along with a wise and wary hobo in “Bird On The Wire” on his way to the horizon of his life, where he came from. Continue along “The Lonely Miles” where thru shear perseverance of will, you may find the truth you seek. Know that though “You Can’t Go Home” because of incriminating life circumstances beyond your control, a new chance awaits as you travel thru the night and as in “Is It Possible?” Everything will be all right.

Dead End, straight ahead, Dry Gulch Road, they keep it said…
Better not go down, to that graveyard alone
There’s something hiding there, something, something you shouldn’t know
Something’s hiding there, something’s hiding there
Something’s hiding there you should not know
Oh, you should have listened to what that old man said…
Though he seemed very feeble he had a secret in his head
About how they shot the preacher and to his life they put an end
There’s something hiding there, something’s hiding there
Something’s hiding there you should not know

Instrumental:
Now he wanders through the graveyard singing hymns so soft and low
Because when they killed the preacher, they took his life but could not take
his soul…
There’s something hiding there, something hiding there,
Now there’s something hiding there you should not know
There’s something hiding there, something hiding there,
Something’s hiding there you should not know

He lived down by the railroad tracks, down by Shady Lane
He lived out of a gunnysack near the rolling trains
He drifted into town one day, I don’t know if he’ll stay
But for now this dusty hobo camp is where he spends his days…
He says he’s traveled far and wide, always moven’ on
The horizon was his destination and where he had come from
I asked what he had learned in time from all his travelen’ ways?
He looked at me and pointed up, I heard the old man say…

Chorus:
There’s a bird on the wire over there, there’s a bird on the wire over there
There’s a bird on the wire, he couldn’t get much higher
There’s a bird on the wire over there…
He’ll be singing in the morning over there, he’ll be singing in the morning over there
He’ll be singing in the morning, a song about the glory
He’ll be singing in the morning over there…

Second Verse:
A man must take a measure of the way he spends his days
If he’s liven’ like he ought to do or if he’s gone astray?
He’ll follow many roads until someday he finds his place
Just ramblen’ thru the countryside on an old highway…
But there comes a time when he must rest and stay just for awhile
Take refuge by the wayside after walken’ many a mile
To stop and think about if he is going the right way?
And to just listen to the singing of a morning jay…

Chorus:
Outro: There’s a bird on the wire over there…

I took my life and started to run
Back down the road where I’d come from
Took my dreams and hid them away,
They can only bring me sadness today
‘Cause I can’t go home…no more

I had to flee from the scene of the crime
And from the place that I left behind
I was an innocent man
But I paid the price
In the county jail, where I did my time
‘Cause I can’t go home…no more
Do do do dodo do do

I’m taking flight like a bird in the night
And in my darkest hour, gonna’ see the light
And I will break these ties that bind
On the road ahead, soon the sun will shine
‘Cause I can’t go home…no more
Do do do dodo do do

‘Cause I can’t go home…no more, home no more
Do do do dodo do do

Look at what has happened, my friend, you’ve gone and found you someone you can trust
You lost your faith along the way and thought it was too late to change your luck
You had a love a long time ago, it ended and it turned your heart to stone
Now you didn’t believe that this could be true and you would live your life all alone

Chorus:
But it looks like love, it looks like love may stay here for awhile
It looks like love; it looks like love may stay here for awhile
Yes, it looks like love may stay here, it looks like love may stay here
It looks like love may stay here for awhile

Verse:
You met a girl in San Anton she was liv’en hard and keep’en on the run
She thought that she had seen it all and could hear loves beck and call no more
She had a man when she was young it started out so good but went so wrong
Now she didn’t think it could happen again and that her chance at love had come and gone

Chorus:

Verse:
The night you met it was raining and cold the wind had chilled you to your very soul
The cantina light were all aglow and you stopped to rest from a hard day on the road
You’re not really sure what happened that night but when there came the morning light
You were together and now the story goes…

Chorus:

When we first met, I couldn’t believe my eyes, that you had come into my life
Before I knew it you were all I could see and didn’t know what was happening to me

Chorus:
Now all’s forgiven in my mind, the creek’s gonna rise and the sun’s gonna shine
And if I seem a bit surprised, it’s all forgiven in my mind

Verse:
As time went on it was hard to conceive and I didn’t know what it could mean
All of my life I had looked to find the kind of love I saw in your eyes…

Chorus:
But it’s all forgiven in my heart is the song they play on those heavenly harps
With grace from how grateful we are when all’s forgiven in our hearts

Bridge:
Though we search the world in vain and the story seems to end the same
But if our hope and faith remain, love will find a way and it will come to stay…

Verse:
Then one day I realized you had led me on and told me lies
And left me alone with tears in my eyes and a broken heart just wondering why?

Chorus:
But It’s all forgiven in my mind, now the sun’s gonna shine and the bells will chime
And the birds will sing in that old oak tree that love will come back to me
Cause all’s forgiven in our hearts is the song they play on those heavenly harps
With praise for how grateful we are when all is forgiven in our hearts

Outro:
And when I die it will be alright… now all’s forgiven in my life…

Is it possible, things are how they’re supposed to be?
And between the lines, everything is what it seems?
So, then this is it because there’s nowhere else to go?
Do you believe it’s so, will we ever really know?
But the time is now and we’re living out our dreams
Until it’s over now, will it remain a mystery?
Is it possible, do you think it’s so, will we ever know where the time goes?

2nd Verse and Chorus:
Is it possible, when you’re driving in your car?
Did you ever think that you would get this far?
Ain’t it funny how, as you climb another hill
And you’re looking down that you must look up still?
As you travel on down around the bend…
And you wonder how will you ever reach the end?
Is it possible, do you think it’s so, will we ever know how the wind blows?
Is it possible, will we ever know, where the river flows and why we all must grow old, is it possible?

3rd Verse and Chorus:
Is it possible as you start another day?
That the more things change the more they stay the same?
And this rising sun as your day begins
Will light your way and will set again
On the road ahead as you journey thru the night
When the morning comes everything will be all right
Is it possible, do you think it’s so, will we ever know, if our love will grow?
Is it possible, will we ever know where the rivers flow and why we all must grow old?
Is it possible, is it possible, is it possible, is it possible?

As the clock ticks away the seconds of our lives
What decides who will live and who will die?
As the leaves fall, one-by-one
Who will answer for what’s been done?
For those of us with broken dreams
With eyes so blind we cannot see
Left to wander aimlessly
Like a bird to fly with broken wings

Chorus:
For the ravaged land, the frozen sky
The endless suffering, the silent cry
Will it ever be heard?

Verse:
The journey of a lifetime brings
Our rendezvous with destiny
We are but here for a time so brief
A moment in eternity
We ask ourselves what does it mean?
Why can’t we live in harmony?
In a world where we may not belong
Who’s to say what is right or what is wrong?

Chorus:

I’m taking the time, taking the time to get over
This feeling inside is making me seem so much older
But the world just keeps on turning, going round and round
And the ones that keep on singing will always hear the sound
I’m taking the time, taking the time so much slower
When it’s moving too fast it makes it all seem so much colder
But the changes keep on coming, going round and round
And the river keeps on running as the rain comes falling down

Chorus:
Oh…the world keeps turning around, oh…as the rain comes falling down
Oh…the world keeps turning around and the ones that keep believing
Will always hear that sound…

Verse:
I’m taking the time, taking the time to discover
The secrets within it’s time to begin to uncover
But the wheel of life keeps turning, going round and round
And the lightening turns to thunder as the mountains will resound

Chorus:
Oh…the world keeps turning around, oh…as the rain comes falling down
Oh…the world keeps turning around but the ones that keep believing
Will always hear that sound…
That life is worth living and what’s lost can still be found
As the world keeps turning…around

I’ve been walking the lonely miles it takes to get to where I’m bound
I’ve been talking to the people passing, living alongside the road

Chorus:
Take it slow, don’t let go, you can’t let things upset you so
Stay on track, give some slack, can’t you feel it coming back?

Verse:
Say can you tell me, do you have a notion of where a soul might go?
To find the answer, just keep on walking, sooner or later it will show

Chorus:
Take it slow, don’t let go, you can’t let things upset you so
Stay on track, give some slack, can’t you feel it coming back?

End:
I’ve been walking the lonely miles it takes to get to where I’m bound

I know there’s something coming, in the distance feel the drumming
From this song that I’ve been strumming, yes I know I hear it coming
What could it be?
On the wind, I sense a warning and dark clouds of doubt are forming
They foretell a storm is growing in a future of foreboding
Time will tell what it means
Chorus:
I can’t say for the life of me, what these changes are going to bring
I don’t know what it’s supposed to be, anymore
Verse:
Yes I know I’ve seen it coming, down the road where I’ve been running
From the sadness of our loving, in my heart, I feel it coming
Back to me
Can we turn the tides of sorrow? Start to build a new tomorrow?
Do we have the will to meet, our coming destiny?
Will we still be free?
Chorus:
I can’t say for the life of me, what these changes are going to bring
Some kind of omen of what will be, up ahead we’ll see…
Verse:
Yes I know there’s something coming, in the distance feel the drumming
From this song that I’ve been strumming, yes I know I hear it coming
Back to me…What will be?

Baby don’t go, don’t go away, you’ll take more than my heart if you leave today
You’ll take all our dreams it took so long to build
You’ll leave with that funny way you make me feel
I took a chance on loving you because I thought you loved me too
You’ll bring back the devil to my door
Just when he thought I don’t live here no more

Chorus:
But every day could be filled with sunshine, just drinking up the morning in a glass
And every night could be another fun time if we just make it last

Verse:
Baby don’t go, oh don’t you know, you mean more to me than I can show
You can take all my money just don’t leave me alone
And don’t let this be the end of the road
Sometimes a man does what he can but losing you is more than I can stand
You’ll bring back the devil to my door
Just when he thought I don’t live here no more

Chorus:
But if you say that you’ll remain forever then there is nothing more that I could ask

And if we could just stay together and leave our troubles in the past

Woke up in the morning I was feeling fine, how you gonna’ spend your days?
Still, one question comes to mind…just let it go its way
I’ve been thru so many scenes, chasing after dreams
About the way it’s supposed to be…it can’t be what it seems
There’s always something, someone said, about the hidden things
Somehow, somewhere, goin’ on…, that you didn’t see

Chorus:
I’ve been told the people there are doing fine
They spend their time living like they please

Second Verse:
You can try to seize the day and catch the golden ring
Be the richest man in all the land, the king of everything
But once you have it all you’ll find that you forgot one thing
That the greatest prize of all is what you have for free
Me, I found there’s nowhere else that I would rather be
Than just sitt’en around with you and seeing what it brings

Chorus:
I’ve been told the people there are doing fine
They spend their time living like they please

A long time ago when we first started out
Took all our eyes could find
I can still recall it now, oh how we tried
So, come to me my angels, don’t you cry
I’m gonna be all right bye and bye

Verse/Chorus:
And now that we’re much older, taken by the times
I can still sing to you as you fly on by
So, come to me my angels, don’t you cry
I’m gonna be all right bye and bye
I’m gonna be all right bye and bye

Bridge:
But the road leads on before us like a story yet untold
And a lifetime is a journey that leads us to our home

Verse/Chorus:
And when at last we meet again on that distant shore
We’ll be together on that day and forever more
So, come to me my angels, don’t you cry
I’m gonna be all right bye and bye
I’m gonna be all right bye and bye
I’m gonna meet you there in the sky

And as you pass thru a desolate town in the southern US, you stop to rest in a cantina for the night and meet a kindred wandering stranger out of pure happenstance that just may offer you another chance at love and life long ago abandoned with renewed hope in “Looks Like Love.” And maybe this has answered the creeping anticipation you feel in “Somethings Coming” or could end up another disappointment as with a couple that grapples with the possibility of losing it all in “Baby Don’t Go”. Stop to heal amid the chaos of the challenges that life brings in “Taking the Time”. Learn to forgive, if not forget, being misled and disappointed in Love in “All’s Forgiven.” Spend your days with someone you love as the greatest prize of all in “What It Brings.”

And at journey’s end, return to meet your better Angels that have guided you and waited patiently for your return in “Bye and Bye.”
